Bags!

"I can't carry more stuff!" It's a common problem, especially with players that haven't earned enough experience points to max out their strength yet. Here's a list of where you can find a bag (this will include guild bags too, if ** is listed in the item name, it cannot be given to another player). Our standard unit of measurement is the dagger that can be purchased at the Pinnacle Smithy.

We know there's a lot more to be found on the mud than what is listed here at the moment; if you know of one that's not listed and would like to share, please let us know the directions to find it.

So what do bags bring to the table?

For one, they can make it easier to organize a busy inventory. At shops for example you can 'sell all from bag 1'. Primarily though, they enable you to carry more than you might be limited to by your encumbrance level. As a quick example of this, a fully expanded Bag of Stretching can hold 6 times more than the weight of the bag itself. But how much does the bag actually weigh? How much can you carry? Here is a quick guide to encumbrance and the weight of things.

Using numbers available from some specific guild encumbrance measurements we can get a very straightforward view on both item weight and encumbrance. At its foundation, encumbrance and weight use a system of measurement similar to ounces and pounds. With 1 pound being equal to 16 ounces. Terminology on 3K for this has no standard, so just be aware that 1 encumbrance = 16 "units" which some guilds use to represent their current and max inventory capacity. In nearly all cases, most items skills and stats rely on a number that is divisible by 16. Because of this you will likely never encounter a sword that uses 1.5 encumbrance. It will either be 1 or 2 (or more) but never something in-between. In the case of bags, we used smithy daggers to measure their capacity. Each dagger weighs in at exactly 1 encumbrance. They are cheap and in unlimited supply, and therefore an easy item to use for testing. You can partially determine this by looking at the dagger. In its description you will see 'It looks light.'. This message indicates the item weighs between 16 and 32 "units", or more specifically, 1-2 encumbrance.

How can you calculate encumbrance?

At 0 strength, you have a base encumbrance of 10. Each point of strength you increase raises your capacity by 1. This is a very straightforward method for calculating your encumbrance level. If you raise the adventuring.packing.carrying skill, each point of training will increase your encumbrance by 3.

How much things weigh?

Most items have a weight description when you look at them. Items will nearly always weight whole encumbrance numbers. The only exception to this is items that are 'very light' will come in under 1 full encumbrance, being 2 or 4 etc, but less than 16. Sometimes items that would seem identical can fluctuate within this identifier. Preserved corpses for example can sometimes weigh either 3 or 4 encumbrance, though their appearance would otherwise seem the same. Similarly the Aurothon Shield can be either 16 or 17 encumbrance.

What about coins?

Coin weight has a slight fluctuation that seems to be tied to total quest points, and perhaps the rank of high mortal. The highest tolerance for coins seen so far is 1 encumbrace per 9900 coins. Other testing has been seen as low as 7400 for a non high mortal. Coin weight, similar to gear, jumps in whole intervals of 16 at each mark. So if 9900 is your limit, picking up 9899 more will not add to your encumbrance, but the final coin will add the next full encumbrance point. There is no incremental increase. The only caveat to this formula is moving from 0 coins to the first encumbrance. Again using 9900 as an example, moving from 0 to 9899 or anywhere in between will add 1/16 encumbrance, and the final 15/16 will be applied once you hit 9900. Beyond this, every increment of 9900 will add exactly 1 encumbrance. As of writing this, each high mortal tested regardless of rank had a 9900 tolerance.

Weight descriptions in some detail.
Description: Weight:
It looks very light. = Less than 1 (2/16, 4/16 etc)
It looks light. = 1 - 2 encumbrance
It doesn't look too heavy. = 2 - 4 encumbrance
It looks heavy. = 5 - 6 encumbrance
It would take considerable effort to lift this. = 16 / 17 encumbrance
You'll most likely herniate a disc lifting this. = 24 encumbrance
Encumbrance descriptions: If you look at your inventory, a message at the bottom will give an approximate indication of your current capacity:
Description: %
You are lightly burdened. 15%
You are burdened. 30%
You are encumbered. 45%
You are heavily loaded. 60%
You are over taxed. 75%
You are collapsing under your load. 100%
